Seriously, how many times have you heard how important communication is in any type of relationship? It really is the basis for your friendships, with your significant other or with your family. Therefore no matter who you ask it is one of the biggest thing that you have to learn. I don’t believe I know everything (cause I most certainly do not) but over the years these are 3 tips for good communication that I have come up with and learned myself.

Just say it

No matter how hard it is, just say it! This is one of my biggest struggles. But when it comes down to talking about a topic, especially a hard one, you have to just come out and start the conversation. It’s not easy to open your mouth and let the words come out to start the discussion. But when you do it will feel that much better to finally have put the topic out there and open up that dialog.

Always listen

Once you have that open dialog going about life situations or topics, the next step is to listen. You have to be willing to listen to what the other person has to say. Whether you agree with it or not, interrupting the person you are talking to isn’t going to get you anywhere. Upsetting each other by not letting the other person finish means that neither of you can fully express how you feel about the topic. So, take the time during your discussion to actually listen before you respond.

Share yourself

Sometimes sharing about yourself, your day, your fears, your joys, can help open up more dialog between you and the person you hope to communicate more with. Showing them that you’re able to talk about something that is bothering you or fills you with joy will help them to realize they can open up more to you. It gives your friend or significant other the feeling that they can share with you because you were vulnerable and comfortable enough with them to open up.
